Description:

Join us as journalist legend Hans-Wilhelm Steinfeld takes us on an insightful and entertaining tour of Russian politics, society and history!

It's not always easy to understand what's going on in our largest neighboring country. But that's precisely why it's important that we try.
And there is hardly anyone who can better explain how history and the present are connected than Hans-Wilhelm Steinfeld.

Through decades as NRK's foreign correspondent, Steinfeld has gotten to know Russia closely. He has been up close – from the Soviet era and the collapse of the union, to today's geopolitical drama and the war in Ukraine.

During the dramatic coup attempt in 1991, Steinfeld's interview with Boris Yeltsin was broadcast worldwide – even Gorbachev secretly listened from his captivity in Crimea.

He has stood face to face with power, and he has felt the pressure from it – like when Russian security forces stopped him in Ingushetia and deleted much of his footage.
But he has always retained his independent voice – whether it is because of, or despite, his Bergen-style drive and twinkle in his eye, is hard to say.

This will be an evening with the long lines and big politics – but also with the small, human stories, told with genuine storytelling joy à la Hans-Wilhelm Steinfeld.

Hans-Wilhelm Steinfeld is one of Norway's most distinguished journalists and has won numerous awards for his work. He has written sixteen books about the history, politics and society of Eastern Europe and is the only person in NRK's history to have been appointed foreign correspondent four times. He holds a cand.philol. degree and has studied at the universities of Oxford and Moscow.
