Description:

The 1980s: Tor Inge Vormedal

The 1980s were marked by liberalism with longer opening hours, easier access to credit and the construction of new shopping centres. The Kårstøanlegget and Nordsjøhallen laid the foundation for stable employment in the region, while a number of locally owned businesses came into the hands of outsiders. The word PC became associated with shortness of breath and mobile phones were as heavy as lead. It was during this decade that Haugesund became a film festival town and a herring jazz town. It was strictly forbidden for young people to use skateboards, but "breakdancing" in the pedestrian street was completely okay.
